In heavy machinery, automotive manufacturing and shipbuilding, welding medium-thick plates and large structural components has long been one of the most demanding production challenges. Conventional arc welding relies heavily on operator experience, creates heavy smoke and spatter, and often causes workpiece deformation due to excessive heat input. 1. Thermal deformation is difficult to control: the large heat-affected zone of conventional arc welding can cause wave deformation and residual stress, reducing the dimensional accuracy of structural parts.

2. Deep-penetration welding is inefficient: single-pass penetration is limited, so large grooves and multi-pass welding are often required, increasing time, filler material and production cost.

The Breakthrough: Deep Penetration with Gantry Platform Laser Welding

Its core mechanism is the keyhole effect. When laser power density reaches 10⁶ to 10⁷ W/cm², the material surface vaporizes instantly and the vapor pressure forms a keyhole in the molten pool. Compared with the approximate 1:1 depth-to-width ratio of conventional arc welding, laser deep-penetration welding can reach 5:1 to 10:1, making single-pass welding of medium-thick plates easier while reducing filler metal consumption.
